“Faceless content is free now — AI does everything” is the pitch. The tools are real, and so is the invoice. It just doesn’t arrive as one bill. It arrives as seven or eight small subscriptions, each priced in a different unit — characters, GPU hours, media hours, executions, seats — which is why almost nobody knows their true monthly total until the card statement lands.

This article adds it up: every layer of a faceless operation, priced from published plans checked in October 2026, assembled into three honest stacks — bare-bones, standard, and pro. No earnings claims. Just the cost side.

Start with the voice math, because it sizes everything else

Voice is the layer creators misprice most: it isn’t sold by the minute. It’s sold by the character.

The working assumption, stated plainly: published ElevenLabs explainers use roughly 1,000 characters ≈ 1 minute of English narration as the standard benchmark, with a realistic planning range of 800–1,000 characters per finished minute depending on pace and pauses. We model at 1,000, so the estimate stays conservative.

Now run a real schedule through it:

Output patternFinished narrationCharacters needed (at ~1,000/min)Smallest ElevenLabs plan that fits
8 Shorts/month at ~45 seconds~6 minutes~6,000Free (10,000) — but non-commercial, so not for a monetised channel
8 Shorts + 2 long videos (8 min)~22 minutes~22,000Starter — 30,000 credits, $6/month
8 Shorts + 4 long videos (8 min)~38 minutes~38,000Creator — 121,000 credits, $22/month
12 long videos (10 min) + 24 Shorts~144 minutes~144,000Pro — 600,000 credits, $99/month

Three traps hide in that table. Regeneration is spend: every re-take burns characters again, so a tidy 38-minute month can consume 50,000–60,000 credits in practice. The pool is shared: text-to-speech, sound effects, music and dubbing all draw from the same credits, so a dubbed version quietly shrinks your narration budget. And the free tier is a test tier — 10,000 credits, no commercial licence. Starter is the first plan a monetised channel can stand on.

That is why ElevenLabs sits in the standard stack at Creator, not Starter: one long video a week plus Shorts and re-takes outgrows 30,000 credits fast. Published tiers, checked October 2026: Free $0 (10,000 credits), Starter $6/month (30,000), Creator $22/month (121,000), Pro $99/month (600,000), with extra minutes beyond quota at roughly $0.20/minute on Starter, $0.18 on Creator and $0.17 on Pro and above.

The stack, layer by layer

1. Scripting and research

One paid LLM subscription is the sane default — ChatGPT Plus at $20/month or Claude Pro at $20/month ($17/month annual), checked October 2026. Paying for both on day one is this layer’s most common waste; pick one and use the other’s free tier as backup. API access only wins at high, automated volume, and meters separately — the second-meter problem in the true cost of an AI agent.

Flat-lay: a long pale paper receipt unrolled and curling across an off-white desk, held down by a small brass microphone, a pastel blue calculator and a coiled grey audio cable

2. Voice

Covered above. Budget line: $0–$6 testing, $22 working, $99 at volume.

3. Visuals: stock or generated — pick one primary

Faceless channels run on B-roll or generated images; paying full price for both before you know your format is a leak.

  • Stock: Storyblocks Unlimited All Access is $30/month billed annually ($360/year) — unlimited footage, templates and photos, plus music and sound effects. Essentials, without audio, is $21/month billed annually.
  • AI images: Midjourney Basic is $10/month (~3.3 fast GPU hours, roughly 200 image jobs); Standard is $30/month (15 fast hours plus unlimited Relax-mode images). No free tier.

Stock suits history and documentary formats; generated images suit story and “what if” formats.

4. Editing and captions

CapCut is the honest starting point: its free tier covers core timeline editing and exports, and many serious channels never leave it. CapCut Pro is $19.99/month (or $179.99/year) for 4K export and the full AI toolkit; a mobile-only Standard tier is $9.99/month. CapCut warns prices vary by region and device, so treat those as US reference prices. Descript is the upgrade when editing-by-transcript saves real hours: Hobbyist $24/month ($16 annual), Creator $35/month ($24 annual, 30 media hours), Business $65/month ($50 annual). Most solo channels need one of these, not both.

5. Thumbnails and design

Canva Pro is $15/month, or $120/year (about $10/month effective). For long-form YouTube it is rarely optional for long: background removal, premium elements, brand kit and Magic Resize are what thumbnails actually use. For a Shorts-only operation, Canva Free genuinely suffices — thumbnails barely exist in that format.

6. Music and sound

The forgotten line. Platform libraries (YouTube Audio Library, TikTok’s cleared sounds) cost $0 and are fine at the start. The step up is a dedicated licence: Epidemic Sound Creator is $9.99/month on annual billing ($17.99 monthly); Pro, at $16.99/month annual, covers multiple channels and client work. Storyblocks Unlimited already bundles music and effects — if you took it in layer 3, this layer is already paid. Don’t buy it twice.

7. Scheduling and distribution

Native scheduling — YouTube Studio, TikTok and Meta’s own tools — is $0 and, for one operator on two or three channels, genuinely enough. Third-party schedulers earn their fee at many channels or with a team approval queue. We count $0 below, deliberately.

8. Automation glue

This is where a hobby becomes an operation: scripts filed, voice jobs queued, captions checked, uploads scheduled. n8n is the usual glue. n8n Cloud Starter is €24/month on monthly billing (€20/month billed annually) for 2,500 workflow executions; Pro is €60/month (€50 annual) for 10,000. US-facing breakdowns put those at roughly $24 and $60. The self-hosted Community Edition is free software — you pay only for a small server, with 2026 breakdowns putting a basic VPS at roughly $5–$6/month (directional; hosting prices and your admin time vary). A repurposing workflow is where this pays first — see the n8n content-repurposing pipeline, and the one-person automation stack for the wider picture.

Three stacks, three true totals

All totals use monthly billing where offered, and say so where a plan is annual-only. Taxes and regional pricing excluded.

Bare-bones — minimum viable, ~$6/month

LayerChoiceMonthly cost
ScriptingLLM free tier$0
VoiceElevenLabs Starter (30,000 credits, commercial licence)$6
VisualsFree stock libraries (Pexels/Pixabay-type sources)$0
Editing/captionsCapCut Free$0
Thumbnails/designCanva Free$0
MusicPlatform audio libraries$0
SchedulingNative platform tools$0
AutomationNone — manual handoffs$0
Total$6/month

Honest limit: roughly 30 minutes of finished narration a month before re-takes, and free visual libraries start repeating. A validation stack, not a growth stack.

Standard — what a serious solo creator actually runs, ~$131/month

LayerChoiceMonthly cost
ScriptingChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro$20
VoiceElevenLabs Creator (121,000 credits)$22
VisualsStoryblocks Unlimited All Access (annual billing; includes music/SFX)$30
Editing/captionsCapCut Pro$19.99
Thumbnails/designCanva Pro$15
MusicIncluded in Storyblocks$0
SchedulingNative platform tools$0
Automationn8n Cloud Starter (monthly billing)$24
Total$130.99/month

Swap note: replace Storyblocks with Midjourney Standard ($30) for a generated-image-led format — the total doesn’t move. Self-hosting n8n cuts roughly $18–$19, at the cost of your own server admin.

Pro — volume and small-team, ~$336/month

LayerChoiceMonthly cost
ScriptingOne LLM subscription (lead seat)$20
VoiceElevenLabs Pro (600,000 credits)$99
VisualsStoryblocks Unlimited All Access$30
Visuals (generated)Midjourney Standard$30
Editing/captionsDescript Business (monthly billing)$65
Thumbnails/designCanva Pro$15
MusicEpidemic Sound Pro (annual rate; multi-channel/client cover)$16.99
SchedulingNative platform tools$0
Automationn8n Cloud Pro (monthly billing)$60
Total$335.99/month

Note what is not in the total: extra seats. A second Descript editor, Canva seat or LLM subscription is a real per-person line — team bills grow by seats faster than by features.

The hidden costs people forget

Voice overage and the shared pool. Extra minutes beyond quota run roughly $0.17–$0.20 each, and dubbing and music spend the same credits as narration.

Regeneration waste, everywhere. Re-takes in voice, re-rolls in Midjourney (extra fast GPU time is $4/hour), re-renders in your editor. Build a 20–30% slop factor into metered layers — directional guidance, not a published figure.

Music licensing scope. A personal-channel licence does not cover a second channel, client work or ads. That scope jump is why Epidemic Sound Pro exists; the wrong tier is a claims risk, not a saving.

Annual-billing lock-in disguised as a discount. Storyblocks and Epidemic Sound quote friendly numbers on annual billing; monthly equivalents are higher (Epidemic Creator: $9.99 annual rate vs $17.99 monthly). Price your stack on the basis you’ll actually use.

Your time — stated as time, not money. A standard-tier channel making one long video and two Shorts a week typically takes several hours per video across scripting, generation, editing and upload, even automated. We won’t dollar-value your hours — that’s your call — but a “$131 stack” needing 10 hours a week is a different business from one needing three. Automation (layer 8) is the only line that buys time back.

FAQ

How much does a faceless YouTube channel really cost per month?

On published October 2026 prices: about $6/month to validate a format, $131/month for the standard solo stack, and $336/month for volume/team. The spread is mostly voice volume, and whether you pay for stock, editing and automation.

Which ElevenLabs plan do I actually need?

Do the character math: finished minutes × ~1,000 characters, plus a re-take buffer. Under ~25 minutes a month, Starter ($6, 30,000 credits) can work. A weekly long video plus Shorts lands on Creator ($22, 121,000). Past ~120,000 credits of real use, you’re on Pro ($99, 600,000).

Can I run a faceless channel for $0?

Technically, briefly: free LLM tiers, CapCut Free, Canva Free, free stock and platform music. The blocker is voice — ElevenLabs’ free tier has no commercial licence, so a monetised channel needs at least Starter at $6.

Is n8n worth it for one channel?

At bare-bones volume, no — manual handoffs are fine. It pays when handoffs repeat weekly: script → voice → captions → upload → log. Cloud Starter (€20/month annual, 2,500 executions) covers a solo operation; self-hosting cuts the cost to a small VPS fee.

Stock footage or AI images — which is cheaper?

Comparable at entry: Midjourney Basic is $10/month, Storyblocks Essentials is $21/month billed annually, and both have a $30/month working tier. Choose by format, not price. Both together is a pro-tier decision.

What’s the first upgrade from bare-bones?

Voice headroom: Starter → Creator is a $16 step that removes the character anxiety. After that, whichever layer eats your hours — usually a paid editor tier or Canva Pro.

Methodology

What we did: Built the stack from published vendor pricing and independent pricing breakdowns checked in October 2026, and modelled three output patterns from those list prices. Voice volume uses a stated assumption — ~1,000 characters per finished minute of English narration, within a published planning range of roughly 800–1,000 — labelled wherever it drives a number. Totals use monthly billing where offered; annual-rate plans (Storyblocks, Epidemic Sound) are flagged in their rows.

What we did NOT do: We did not run a channel on these stacks, measure real credit consumption, or test output quality. This is published-price modelling, not a lab test or an earnings estimate. No revenue or RPM figure appears here, because none was measured. Prices change — ElevenLabs and n8n both repriced during 2026 — so confirm on the vendor page before annual billing.

Conflict disclosure: n8n and ElevenLabs are affiliate partners of this site, included as the default choices in their layers. The voice math and the self-hosted n8n alternative (which earns us nothing) are presented in full, so you can route around either affiliate.

AWL verdict

A faceless channel is not free, and it is not expensive — it is itemised, which is worse, because itemised costs hide. The honest numbers: $6 to test, roughly $131 a month to run seriously solo, roughly $336 at team volume. Spend first on voice headroom and the editing layer that returns your hours; let second seats wait until output — not optimism — demands them. And do the character math before ElevenLabs does it for you, on your invoice.
