The $50 challenge: a real business stack, not a wish list

Most “tool stack” posts are affiliate catalogs with no budget and no total. This one has a hard constraint: seven tools, combined cost under $50/month, enough to run a real one-person content business — newsletter, automation, landing pages, lead capture, and transactional email.

Here is the proof before the pitch:

#ToolJobPlan to buyCost/mo (checked October 2026)
1n8nAutomation backboneCloud Starter, annual€20 (~$22.73)
2beehiivNewsletter publishingLaunch$0
3KitEmail funnels + digital productsNewsletter (free)$0
4CarrdLanding pagesPro Standard ($19/yr)~$1.58
5TallyForms + lead captureFree$0
6ResendTransactional emailFree$0
7CloudflareDNS, CDN, SSL, securityFree$0
Total~$24.31/month

That’s less than half the budget. The honest reason this works: free tiers do the heavy lifting. Every tool here gives you a genuinely usable free plan, and the only paid items — n8n and Carrd — are paid because their free tiers can’t do the job. We’ll say exactly which ones those are as we go.

1. n8n — the automation backbone (€20/mo)

Potted succulent with calculator and coins — doing more with less budget

Everything in this stack connects through n8n. New newsletter subscriber → welcome sequence trigger. New lead in Tally → enriched and pushed to your sheet. New digital product sale → fulfillment email. Without an automation layer, you’re the integration, and you are a terrible, sleep-deprived API.

Cloud Starter is €20/month on annual billing (€24 month-to-month) for 2,500 executions, unlimited workflows and unlimited users (checked October 2026). One execution = one full workflow run, so 2,500 covers roughly 83 runs a day — plenty for a solo operation. The full unit-economics argument is in our n8n vs Make vs Zapier cost breakdown: n8n’s per-execution billing beats per-step and per-operation pricing at almost every volume.

2. beehiiv — the newsletter ($0)

The newsletter is the business’s front door, so it goes on beehiiv’s Launch plan: free for up to 2,500 subscribers with unlimited sends (checked October 2026) — custom domain, recommendation network, and hosted website included. This is the most generous free newsletter tier we’ve found, and it’s why beehiiv anchors this stack instead of Substack (which takes 10% of paid revenue forever).

The trap to know: cross 2,500 subscribers and you’re on Scale — from $49/month monthly ($43 annual), tiering up with list size. If you monetize with paid subscriptions, beehiiv takes 0% platform fee (only Stripe’s processing), which flips the math against Substack once you’re earning. No rush to pay now.

3. Kit — email funnels and digital products ($0)

Two email tools in one stack looks redundant until you split the jobs: beehiiv publishes the newsletter; Kit’s free Newsletter plan — $0 for up to 10,000 subscribers (checked October 2026) — handles the sales side: lead-magnet delivery, tagging, and digital product checkout with 0% fees.

The free plan’s limit is automation: one basic visual automation, not the full flowchart builder. Full automations start on Creator at $39/month monthly ($33 annual) for 1,000 subscribers. Bridge the gap with n8n: webhook out of Kit, logic in n8n, results written back.

4. Carrd — landing pages ($19/year)

Every lead magnet, waitlist, and sales page lives on Carrd. Pro Standard is $19/year (~$1.58/month), which unlocks custom domains, working forms, and analytics — 10 sites included (checked October 2026). Compare: one month of Squarespace costs more than a year of Carrd.

The honest limitation: every Carrd site is a single page. No blog, no multi-page docs. That’s a feature at this budget — it forces one page per offer, which converts better anyway.

5. Tally — forms and lead capture ($0)

Tally’s free plan is genuinely absurd: unlimited forms, unlimited submissions, all question types, Stripe payment collection, and integrations — free, no credit card, no time limit (checked October 2026). Typeform’s free plan caps you at 10 responses a month; Jotform at 5 forms and 100 submissions. Tally just doesn’t play that game.

Point Tally’s webhook at your n8n instance and every submission becomes a workflow trigger — enrichment, sheet logging, welcome email. Paid plans exist (Pro from ~$24–29/month) for white-labeling and custom domains, but nothing in the free tier blocks a working funnel.

6. Resend — transactional email ($0)

Your automations need to send email that isn’t a newsletter: receipts, magic links, “your download is ready.” Resend’s free plan covers 3,000 emails/month with a 100/day cap, three domains (checked October 2026) — permanent, not a trial. Call it from n8n’s HTTP node and your workflows email anyone from your own domain. The 100/day ceiling is the one to watch: a busy launch day can hit it (paid starts at $20/month for 50,000). Keep newsletters on beehiiv, notifications on Resend, and the boundary never hurts you.

7. Cloudflare — DNS, CDN, SSL, security ($0)

The invisible tool. Cloudflare’s free plan gives you authoritative DNS, global CDN, free universal SSL, unmetered DDoS protection, a managed WAF ruleset, and 100,000 Workers requests/day (checked October 2026). Put your domain on it and every Carrd page and n8n webhook gets faster, safer, and properly encrypted — for $0. There’s no reason not to.

Why this stack actually works as a system

Tools are commodities; the wiring is the product. Here’s the stack doing its job end to end:

  1. A reader lands on your Carrd page (#4), submits the Tally form (#5) → n8n (#1) normalizes the data and subscribes them to beehiiv (#2), tagged in Kit (#3).
  2. Kit delivers the lead magnet and runs the sales sequence; beehiiv publishes the weekly newsletter.
  3. A purchase through Kit’s commerce triggers n8n → Resend (#6) sends fulfillment. Everything sits behind Cloudflare (#7).

Total running cost: ~$24.31/month. You could add a $15/month tool and still be under budget — but don’t. The stack’s real cost is your attention, and every tool you add taxes it.

AWL verdict: This is the stack we would genuinely run a newsletter business on, and $0 is doing most of the lifting. The one upgrade we’d make first: n8n Cloud Pro (€50/mo) when executions, not subscribers, become the bottleneck.

FAQ

Can I really run a business on mostly free tiers?

Yes, with one condition: respect the limits. Tally’s unlimited submissions, beehiiv’s 2,500 free subscribers, Resend’s 3,000 emails/month — these are real, documented limits (checked October 2026), not trials that expire. The free tiers end where scale begins, which is exactly when you can afford to pay. The mistake is staying on a free tier past its limits, not starting on one.

Why both beehiiv and Kit? Isn’t that redundant?

They do different jobs here. beehiiv is the public newsletter — publishing, growth, recommendations. Kit is the sales machine — lead magnets, tagging, digital product checkout with 0% fees. You could run one tool for both, but at $0 for both, specialization is free.

What’s the first thing to break as I grow?

n8n executions. A polling workflow checking every minute burns 43,200 executions a month — your whole Starter plan. Use webhooks instead of polling, and when you genuinely outgrow 2,500 executions, Cloud Pro (€50/mo) or a $6 VPS self-host is the next step. Our cost comparison models the upgrade points.

Does this stack work outside the US?

Yes. All seven tools are globally available with USD/EUR pricing everywhere, and Cloudflare’s edge network helps more the further you are from US data centers. One caveat: Stripe-dependent features (Kit commerce, beehiiv paid subscriptions) depend on Stripe’s availability in your country.

What about AI tools — ChatGPT, Claude, image generators?

Deliberately excluded from the $50 budget. AI subscriptions are the fastest-growing line item in every founder’s budget and the hardest to compare honestly, since usage varies wildly. We compared the research assistants separately — see our Perplexity vs ChatGPT vs Claude comparison. Budget AI separately; keep the infrastructure stack lean.

Methodology

Every price in the table was verified against vendor pricing pages or current third-party pricing coverage in October 2026: n8n Cloud Starter €20/mo annual (2,500 executions, ~$22.73 USD); beehiiv Launch free to 2,500 subscribers with unlimited sends, Scale from $49/mo monthly; Kit Newsletter free to 10,000 subscribers, Creator from $39/mo monthly; Carrd Pro Standard $19/year; Tally free plan with unlimited forms and submissions; Resend free 3,000 emails/month with 100/day cap; Cloudflare free plan (DNS, CDN, SSL, WAF, 100k Workers requests/day). The $24.31/month total uses €20 ≈ $22.73 (published conversion) plus $19/12 ≈ $1.58. Affiliate rates mentioned (beehiiv 50–60% recurring for 12 months; Kit 50% recurring for 12 months; n8n 30% recurring for 12 months) come from the programs’ published partner terms as reported in 2026 affiliate coverage.
