A one-person business doesn’t need a 15-tool stack. It needs four things: something to run the boring work, something to publish the newsletter, something to send emails that aren’t the newsletter, and one place where everything is written down. Everything else is noise until revenue says otherwise.
This post prices all four, gives you the exact plan to buy at each stage, and totals it up. No hype. Just the monthly number.
The stack at a glance
| Component | Tool | Plan to buy on day one | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automation backbone | n8n | Cloud Starter, annual billing | €20 (~$22) |
| Newsletter | Beehiiv | Launch (free, up to 2,500 subscribers) | $0 |
| Email marketing | Kit (ConvertKit) | Free (up to 10,000 subscribers) | $0 |
| Notes, docs, CRM | Notion | Free | $0 |
| Total | ~€20/mo |
That’s the whole stack for twenty euros a month. Every price below was checked October 2026.
Component 1: Automation backbone — n8n

What it does in the stack: Everything that fires without you. New subscriber → tagged in the email system → added to the CRM database → welcome sequence triggered → notification to you. Lead magnet downloads, RSS-to-social drafts, invoice reminders, affiliate link click logs. n8n is the plumbing; the rest of the stack is the fixtures.
The plan to buy: n8n Cloud Starter at €20/month billed annually (€24 month-to-month), 2,500 executions/month — checked October 2026. An execution is one full workflow run regardless of how many steps it contains, so a 10-step lead-routing workflow that fires 1,000 times costs you 1,000 executions, not 10,000. On Zapier-style per-task billing the same workload would be priced by the step.
What to skip: Self-hosting the Community Edition to save €20. It is free, and the fair-code license allows it — but you’re a one-person business, not a sysadmin. A €20 server plus your time fixing updates at midnight is the opposite of leverage. Skip Pro (€50/mo annual, 10,000 executions) until you consistently break 2,500 executions a month. If you’re shopping alternatives, we did the full cost math against Zapier and Make here.
The affiliate angle: n8n’s program pays 30% recurring for 12 months on cloud plans. At Starter, that’s €6/month per referral — not life-changing, but it compounds with content that ranks.
Component 2: Newsletter — Beehiiv
What it does in the stack: The flagship publication. One weekly essay, published and emailed, with a built-in website. Beehiiv’s edge for a solo operator is the monetization layer: an ad network, paid subscriptions, and a Boosts system paying $1–3 per subscriber when readers recommend other newsletters. Your list becomes a revenue channel, not just a cost center.
The plan to buy: Launch — free, up to 2,500 subscribers, unlimited sends. Start free. Stay free until you cross 2,500. When you outgrow it, Scale starts around $43–49/month (beehiiv’s plan names and prices have been shifting this year — confirm at checkout). Don’t pay for automation tiers you can’t yet use.
What to skip: Moving your transactional email to beehiiv. Its automation is fine for welcome sequences but primitive compared to a real email platform. Run the newsletter here; run the machinery somewhere else (that’s Kit, next).
The affiliate angle: This is the strongest of the three programs on this page. Beehiiv’s partner program starts at 50% recurring for 12 months and tiers up to 55% then 60% as your referrals grow, with a 60-day first-click cookie. A Scale referral at ~$49/mo earns you ~$24.50/month for a year. The catch: month 13 is a cliff — the customer can stay for years and you stop earning. It rewards steady publishing, not one viral post.

Component 3: Email marketing — Kit (formerly ConvertKit)
What it does in the stack: The machine behind the list. Visual automations, tags, sequences, forms that actually convert, and a creator-friendly ecosystem for paid recommendations and digital products. Your newsletter is the broadcast; Kit is the CRM-plus-automation that scores leads, runs funnels, and sells the products.
The plan to buy: Free — up to 10,000 subscribers, unlimited broadcasts. This is the most generous free tier in the category. The upgrade point is Creator at $33/month billed annually ($390/yr) at 1,000 subscribers (checked October 2026), which unlocks automations and sequences. Pro at $66/mo annual is for when you have serious volume.
What to skip: Paying for Creator before you have automations worth automating. The free plan already includes unlimited broadcasts and forms — you can run a real list on it. Upgrade when you need sequences and visual automation, not before.
The affiliate angle: Kit pays 50% of everything a referral pays in their first 12 months, and if you refer 10+ paying customers in a year you unlock Bronze/Silver/Gold status that keeps 10–20% flowing for as long as the customer stays. Because Kit prices by list size, your commission grows when your referral’s list grows — your earnings scale with their success.
Component 4: Notes, docs, and CRM — Notion
What it does in the stack: The brain. Content calendar, post drafts, research database, CRM pipeline (Lead → Pitched → Active → Paid), SOP library, and the swipe file. One workspace, linked databases, zero tabs lost.
The plan to buy: Free. The free plan is genuinely enough for a solo operator — unlimited pages and blocks for individual use, and you only hit paid walls with heavy file uploads or team collaboration you don’t have.
What to skip: Notion AI as a paid add-on right now. You already have dedicated research tools for the finding-and-verifying work; Notion is where findings get organized. Keep the boundary clean.
The affiliate angle — an honest mess: The current terms could not be verified. Sources conflict: older materials describe “up to $50 per signup + 20% of year-one revenue” via PartnerStack, a 2026 source lists “50% of all payments for the first 12 months” via a network campaign, and another review reports the program is currently closed to new affiliates. Treat Notion as a zero-commission utility in your planning until you confirm terms in your own dashboard. It’s mentioned because it’s the best free option for the job, not because it pays.
The growth path: what upgrades cost
| Stage | Trigger | Change | New total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day one | Launch | Stack above | ~€20/mo |
| Growing | 2,500+ newsletter subs | Beehiiv Scale | ~€20 + ~$49/mo |
| Automating | Need sequences + tags | Kit Creator | +$33/mo |
| Scaling | 2,500+ n8n executions/mo | n8n Pro | €50/mo (replaces €20) |
AWL verdict: Don’t buy the growth stack on day one. The most expensive mistake in solo tooling isn’t the wrong tool — it’s the right tool bought six months too early. Start at ~€20/mo and let subscriber counts, not enthusiasm, pull the trigger on every upgrade.
What this stack deliberately excludes
- A social scheduler. Post natively until you know which channel deserves the automation. Scheduling is a $20–50/month answer to a question you haven’t asked yet.
- A course platform. Notion + Kit’s digital product features + a payment link will sell your first $10k of digital products. Migrate when support tickets say otherwise.
- A paid research tool. If you want one, all three are compared here and the whole lean stack stays under budget here. But it’s optional — free tiers cover the finding, this stack covers the operating.
FAQ
1. Why two email tools — Beehiiv AND Kit? Isn’t that redundant?
Not at the free tier. Beehiiv is the publication (writing, ads, paid subscriptions, growth network). Kit is the automation engine (tags, sequences, funnels, lead scoring). Use each for what it’s best at; both are free to start, so the “two tools” cost is $0.
2. Why n8n instead of Zapier or Make for the automation backbone?
Execution-based pricing. One workflow run = one execution regardless of step count, which makes complex multi-step workflows dramatically cheaper than per-task billing. The full comparison with real numbers is here. The honest caveat: n8n’s learning curve is steeper than Zapier’s. You’re trading setup time for a bill that’s ~10x lower.
3. Can I really run this whole stack for ~€20/month?
Yes — n8n Cloud Starter at €20/mo annual is the only paid component at day one. Everything else (Beehiiv Launch, Kit free, Notion free) is $0 until growth triggers force upgrades. Exchange rates move the dollar figure; the euro figure is the list price.
4. Which affiliate program in this stack is actually worth promoting?
Beehiiv, by the numbers: 50–60% for 12 months is the highest recurring rate here, and newsletters are easy to write about credibly. Kit’s 50% for 12 months plus lifetime status tiers is second. n8n’s 30% is solid but technical content is harder to rank. Notion’s terms couldn’t be verified — treat as zero.
5. What if I’m not technical — is n8n too much?
It’s the steepest learning curve in this stack, honestly. Budget one weekend: build one workflow (newsletter signup → CRM → welcome email) and you’ll have the pattern for everything else. If that weekend fails, Make is the easier alternative — just price the difference first, because at volume it adds up fast.
Methodology
Prices were taken from official pricing pages and secondary pricing trackers checked on October 8, 2026: n8n Cloud Starter €20/mo annual / €24 monthly with 2,500 executions; Kit free plan (10,000 subscribers, unlimited broadcasts) and Creator $33/mo billed yearly at 1,000 subscribers; Beehiiv Launch free (2,500 subscribers) with Scale from ~$43–49/mo (plan names and exact figures are shifting — verify at checkout); Notion free tier. Affiliate terms: n8n 30% recurring for 12 months; Beehiiv 50% → 55% → 60% tiers for 12 months with a 60-day first-click cookie; Kit 50% for 12 months with 10–20% status tiers thereafter. Notion affiliate terms could not be verified — sources conflict and one review reports the program closed to new affiliates. The “growth path” table is editorial judgment based on when each free tier’s limits actually bite.
