Why n8n hosting still matters when the software is free
n8n’s Community Edition is free to self-host — no license fee, no execution cap. That sounds like free until you add the rest: a server, backups, updates, SSL, and the hours you spend keeping it all alive. The real choice is never “free vs paid.” It is managed operations vs owned operations.

n8n Cloud turns the whole thing into a subscription with an execution quota: Starter is €20/month billed annually (checked October 2026) for 2,500 workflow executions, 5 concurrent runs, and official support. Self-hosting removes the execution cap entirely but hands you the pager.
Our flagship comparison showed self-hosting is where the large cost gaps live (n8n vs Make vs Zapier). This post answers the next question: where should the self-hosted box live?
Minimum specs before you buy anything

Every host sells you a server; few tell you what n8n actually needs. The documented minimum is 1 vCPU and 2 GB RAM (2 GB is the quoted dev minimum), with 2 vCPU / 4 GB the comfortable real-world starting point for production workflows running on a schedule with PostgreSQL.
| Workload | vCPU | RAM | Storage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Testing, a few personal workflows | 1 | 2 GB | 20 GB+ | SQLite is fine here |
| Comfortable production | 2 | 4 GB | 40 GB+ NVMe | Switch to PostgreSQL |
| Heavy: parallel executions, big payloads, AI chains | 4 | 8 GB | 80 GB+ NVMe | Consider queue mode |
Two practical notes from the guides we read: PostgreSQL beats SQLite for production (better concurrent write handling under webhook traffic), and the #1 beginner mistake is booting without setting N8N_ENCRYPTION_KEY first — lose it and every saved credential is permanently unreadable. The full first-year cost breakdown lives in the n8n self-hosting real-cost TCO guide.
The 5 options, head to head
Prices checked October 2026. All prices below are list prices, not coupons.
| Option | Price (checked Oct 2026) | Specs at that price | Setup effort | Who it’s for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| n8n Cloud Starter | €20/mo billed annually (2,500 executions/mo) | None — fully managed | ~5 min signup | Non-technical users; teams that want support |
| Hostinger KVM 1 | $6.49/mo intro (renews $11.99); KVM 2 $8.99 intro (renews $14.99) | 1 vCPU / 4 GB / 50 GB NVMe (KVM 1); 2 vCPU / 8 GB / 100 GB (KVM 2) | ~30–60 min (one-click n8n app available) | Beginners who want cheap + friendly panel |
| DigitalOcean Basic | $6/mo (1 vCPU/1 GB); $12/mo (1 vCPU/2 GB); $24/mo (2 vCPU/4 GB) | SSD, hourly billing capped monthly | ~1 hr (manual Docker install) | Developers who want clean docs and ecosystem |
| Hetzner CX23 (CX22 successor) | €5.49/mo EU (2 vCPU / 4 GB / 40 GB) | NVMe, 20 TB traffic | ~1 hr (manual Docker install) | Price-per-performance hunters, EU projects |
| Elestio managed n8n | From $14/mo; n8n deployment ≈ $17/mo | Dedicated VM, backups, SSL, OS patching included | ~10 min (one-click deploy) | People who want managed without n8n Cloud’s execution meter |
1. n8n Cloud Starter — the zero-maintenance baseline
Price: €20/month billed annually (checked October 2026); €24/month on monthly billing. Includes 2,500 executions per month, 5 concurrent runs, unlimited workflows and users, and 2,300 AI Assistant credits. Official support and no server to touch.
The catch is the meter: one workflow execution per full run regardless of steps, which is generous — but a polling trigger firing all month will eat executions, and the only way around the cap is upgrading. Pro is €50/month for 10,000 executions.
Choose this if you never want to SSH into anything. If your execution volume is under 2,500/month and your time is worth more than ~€60/hour, this usually wins the math.
2. Hostinger KVM VPS — the beginner-friendly self-host
Price: KVM 1 at $6.49/mo intro (24-month term), renewing at $11.99; KVM 2 at $8.99/mo intro, renewing at $14.99 (checked October 2026). All plans run on AMD EPYC with NVMe storage and include free weekly backups, full root access, and a public API.
Two things to know: Hostinger lists a one-click n8n app on its VPS plans, which cuts setup to the minimum, and the intro pricing requires long-term prepay — renewals run roughly double, so budget for them. [AFFILIATE LINK: hostinger]
If you want the cheapest on-ramp with a control panel that holds your hand, start here on KVM 2 (the 2 vCPU / 8 GB tier) — it matches our “comfortable production” spec with headroom.
3. DigitalOcean — the developer default
Price: Basic droplets from $4/mo (512 MB — too small for n8n, skip it), $6/mo for 1 vCPU/1 GB, $12/mo for 1 vCPU/2 GB, and $24/mo for 2 vCPU/4 GB (checked October 2026). Hourly billing with a monthly cap, billed per-second since January 2026. [AFFILIATE LINK: digitalocean]
The honest trade-off: at $24/month for 2 vCPU/4 GB, DigitalOcean is roughly 4x Hetzner’s comparable box. You pay for US network quality, a 99.99% SLA, the best-written docs in the industry, and an ecosystem (managed databases, Spaces, App Platform) that saves a solo founder real time.
Pick DO if you value documentation, live support chat, and 14+ regions — or if you plan to grow beyond one VPS and want the platform to grow with you.
4. Hetzner — the price-per-performance king (with a caveat)
Price: The old CX22 (2 vCPU/4 GB, ~€3.79–4.35/mo) was deprecated on January 1, 2026. Its replacement, the CX23 Gen3 (2 vCPU / 4 GB / 40 GB), is €5.49/month in EU locations (checked October 2026). US locations are priced noticeably higher. Includes 20 TB of outbound traffic in EU — versus 4 TB on a comparable DigitalOcean tier.
Two honest notes: support is ticket-only (no live chat), and we found no cash affiliate program for Hetzner — only a referral-credit scheme (roughly €20 in credits for the new sign-up, €10 for the referrer, per referral listings checked October 2026). We recommend it anyway because the value is real.
Pick Hetzner if you are comfortable with SSH and ticket support, and your audience or workflows can live in EU regions.
5. Elestio — managed n8n without the execution meter
Price: From $14/month per managed service; a managed n8n deployment lands around $17/month (checked October 2026). That includes a dedicated VM, automated daily backups, SSL, OS patching, and 24/7 monitoring. Deploy on your choice of Hetzner, DigitalOcean, Vultr, or Scaleway — or bring your own VM.
Elestio is the middle path most guides skip: someone else handles provisioning, backups, and patching, but your n8n instance runs unlimited executions — it is your server, not n8n Cloud. The managed layer stops at infrastructure; your workflows stay yours to maintain.
Pick Elestio if you want the self-hosted freedom (no execution cap, full customization) with someone else on server duty.
The hidden cost nobody puts in the comparison table
One 2026 guide estimated DIY maintenance at $150–250/month of your time: initial setup (2–4 hours), weekly security updates (15–30 min), monthly n8n upgrades (30–60 min), backup verification (30 min), plus the random 2 AM incident. Even at a fraction of that rate, a “€5.49 server” is really a €50–100/month commitment once your hours count.
That’s why the deployment checklist matters more than the price table (n8n beginner setup guide): Docker Compose, PostgreSQL, reverse proxy with SSL, off-site backups, uptime monitoring. Follow it and self-hosting stays cheap. Wing it, and the cheapest option becomes the most expensive.
AWL verdict: Pick by technical comfort, not sticker price. Non-technical → n8n Cloud Starter. “I can follow a Docker tutorial and want zero execution cap” → Hetzner CX23 if EU works, Hostinger KVM 2 if you want the friendliest panel. “I want managed but not an execution meter” → Elestio. DigitalOcean is right only when docs, support, and ecosystem justify the 4x premium — and for client work there, [AFFILIATE LINK: cloudways] is worth a look as a managed alternative to rolling your own DO stack.
FAQ
Does self-hosted n8n really have unlimited executions?
Yes. The Community Edition has no execution meter — you pay for the server, not per run. That’s the entire point of self-hosting. The trade-off is that you own uptime, updates, and backups.
Is 1 vCPU / 2 GB RAM really enough?
For testing, yes. For production with schedules and webhooks, budget 2 vCPU / 4 GB with PostgreSQL — 2 GB starts swapping once Postgres runs alongside n8n and a workflow handles chunky payloads.
Can I switch from n8n Cloud to self-hosted later?
Yes — export workflows from n8n Cloud and import them into your instance. The one gotcha: set N8N_ENCRYPTION_KEY explicitly and keep it safe, or encrypted credentials won’t transfer.
Why is Hetzner so much cheaper than DigitalOcean?
Hetzner is a European infrastructure operator with far lower marketing spend and no managed-services layer on raw compute. You pay less and get ticket-only support and fewer regions. For a solo founder’s n8n box, that’s usually a fine trade.
What happened to the Hetzner CX22?
Hetzner deprecated the old CX line on January 1, 2026 and replaced it with Gen3 (CX23, CX33, CX43). If an older tutorial tells you to order a CX22, order a CX23 instead — same concept, updated hardware, €5.49/month in the EU.
Methodology
All prices verified October 2026 against provider pricing pages and current third-party reviews. Prices are list prices; Hostinger’s intro rates require multi-year prepay and renewal pricing is stated. Spec minimums synthesize n8n’s documented requirements with three 2026 self-hosting guides, all converging on 1 vCPU/2 GB minimum and 2 vCPU/4 GB comfortable. Affiliate terms from each program’s public pages: Hostinger (40% starting, up to 60% by volume, one-time on new-customer first purchases), DigitalOcean (10% recurring 12 months). This is a pricing-and-fit comparison, not a performance benchmark — no server was rented or benchmarked for this post.
