Affiliate disclosure: Automated Wealth Lab earns no commissions from any help-desk vendor in this article. We could find no verified affiliate program covering Intercom, Freshdesk, or Tidio at the time of writing, so this piece is a straight traffic/AdSense play. The only revenue-adjacent angle is the DIY section, which points to our existing n8n support-agent benchmark.
You’re the whole support team. The pricing pages weren’t built for you.
Most help-desk pricing guides assume a team of five to fifty. You’re one person answering roughly 500 tickets a month, and you need one number: what does the floor actually cost when the AI meters start running?
The uncomfortable answer is that the seat price is the smallest line on the invoice. Every major vendor now charges twice — once for your seat, and again every time their AI touches a conversation. At 500 tickets a month, that second meter can cost more than the desk itself.
This article models three setups against the same solo workload: Intercom, Freshdesk, and an AI-native alternative (Tidio, billed on conversations rather than seats). All prices are from public pricing pages, checked October 2026. No trials were run, no accounts created — the math comes from the vendors’ own published sheets.
The workload we’re modeling

One agent, roughly 500 customer tickets a month, annual billing throughout (the cheapest published option). We model each vendor twice: seats alone, then seats plus AI resolution at a stated deflection assumption. Deflection rates are scenario assumptions, not measured results — adjust them to your own mix.
Per-seat pricing at solo scale
The seat bills are all small at one seat. That’s the hook; the meter comes later.
| Vendor | Plan | Price (annual billing) | What 1 seat gets you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intercom | Essential | $29/seat/mo ($39 monthly) | Shared inbox, Messenger, ticketing, Help Center, Fin access |
| Intercom | Advanced | $85/seat/mo ($99 monthly) | Workflows, round-robin, multiple inboxes, private Help Center |
| Freshdesk | Growth | $19/agent/mo ($23 monthly) | Core ticketing, portal, knowledge base |
| Freshdesk | Pro | $55/agent/mo ($66 monthly) | SLA policies, routing, custom dashboards, Copilot add-on access |
| Tidio | Starter (annual) | $24.17/mo ($29 monthly) | 100 billable conversations, 10 seats, basic automation |
| Tidio | Growth (annual) | from $49.17/mo ($59 monthly) | From 250 billable conversations, advanced analytics |
Two things stand out immediately. First, Freshdesk undercuts Intercom by $10 a seat at the entry tier — but the Copilot AI add-on is only available on Pro and up, so the “real” Freshdesk starting point for AI-assisted support is $55, not $19. Second, Tidio doesn’t bill per seat at all: it bills billable conversations. For a solo operator doing 500 conversations a month, you’d land on Growth at around the 600-conversation tier, which third-party pricing breakdowns place near $129/month on monthly billing.
Entry seats are cheap. Now the part pricing pages bury.
The AI meters nobody quotes you
This is the table that decides your invoice. All three vendors sell AI resolution as a separate usage meter, on top of seats:
| Vendor | AI product | Unit price (Oct 2026) | Free allowance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intercom | Fin AI Agent | $0.99 per outcome (charged at most once per conversation) | None published on seat plans |
| Intercom | Fin Copilot (for humans) | $29/agent/mo | 10 free conversations per agent |
| Freshdesk | Freddy AI Agent | $49 per 100 sessions (~$0.49/session) | 500 sessions once per account — one-time, not monthly |
| Freshdesk | Freddy AI Copilot | $29/agent/mo ($35 monthly) | Pro and Enterprise plans only |
| Tidio | Lyro AI Agent | $39/mo for 50 conversations ($0.78 each), settling at ~$0.70 at scale | 50 conversations once per account — one-time, not monthly |
The pattern: per-resolution AI costs $0.49–$0.99 per touch across the board. At 500 tickets a month, the AI line is larger than the seat line in every configuration. And the “free” allowances are one-time account credits — they cushion month one, not month six.
The 500-ticket invoice: seats plus AI
Modeling 500 tickets a month with a stated 40% AI deflection assumption (200 AI-handled conversations), annual billing:
| Setup | Seat bill | AI bill | Monthly total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intercom Essential | $29 | 200 Fin outcomes × $0.99 = $198 | $227 |
| Intercom Essential + Copilot | $29 | $198 + $29 = $227 | $256 |
| Freshdesk Growth | $19 | 200 sessions: 2 × $49/100 = $98 | $117 |
| Freshdesk Growth (all 500 via Freddy) | $19 | 5 × $49/100 = $245 | $264 |
| Tidio Growth (~600 convos) | ~$129 | 200 Lyro conversations × $0.70 = $140 | ~$269 |
Read this table carefully: the deflection assumption does the heavy lifting. If your AI actually resolves 60% of tickets instead of 40%, every AI column grows. The vendors’ per-resolution model means your bill scales with exactly the thing you’re trying to automate — the better the AI works, the more you pay for it. That’s the second meter: it taxes your own success.
Also note Freshdesk’s $49/100 sessions meter bills sessions, not resolutions — a customer bouncing around the bot can burn several sessions per ticket. And Tidio’s Lyro and base-plan meters are separate quotas; a conversation the AI starts and a human finishes can count on both.
The n8n DIY alternative: triage before you pay
Here’s the line the affiliate disclosure promised. Before paying $227–$269 a month for someone else’s meter, a solo founder can build ticket triage in n8n for a fraction of that — and this is the monetizable angle on this page, since n8n carries a working affiliate program on this site.
The DIY math, from published sheets (checked October 2026):
- n8n self-hosted: a small VPS runs n8n comfortably. The open-source version carries no per-ticket license.
- LLM triage: a classification + draft-reply pass on gpt-4o-mini costs $0.15 per million input tokens and $0.60 per million output tokens. At roughly 2,000 tokens per ticket (thread context + draft), 500 tickets a month is about 1M tokens — roughly $1/month in model cost.
- Realistic total: $6–$20/month all-in for a 500-ticket triage pipeline that classifies, routes, drafts replies, and escalates to you.
The honest trade-off: you spend a day or two building it, and you own the meter — an LLM token bill that barely registers instead of a $0.99-per-outcome tax. You also lose the polished inbox UI, the shared-inbox niceties, and the managed escalation workflows. If you answer tickets inside Gmail and just need drafting and routing, the DIY route wins by an order of magnitude. If you need a team-ready inbox with SLAs and audit trails, buy the desk.
AWL verdict: For a solo founder at ~500 tickets/month, the headline seat prices are a decoy — the AI meter is the actual product you’re buying. Intercom’s $0.99 Fin outcomes are the most predictable but the most expensive at scale; Freshdesk’s $0.49 sessions look cheaper until multi-turn conversations burn through them; Tidio’s conversation-based billing fits solo operators best but its Lyro quota doubles your bill. Before signing any of them, price the DIY triage first: an n8n pipeline with a mini-class model runs the same 500 tickets for under $20/month, and you keep the meter. Our honest default for a one-person shop is DIY triage + a cheap desk, not a premium AI seat.
FAQ
How much does Intercom actually cost for one person?
$29/month on Essential (annual billing) for the seat alone. Add Fin at $0.99 per AI-resolved conversation — at 200 resolutions a month, that’s $198, for a real total of $227/month. The Fin line, not the seat, is the budget line.
Is Freshdesk cheaper than Intercom for a solo founder?
On seats, yes: $19 vs $29 at entry. But Freshdesk’s Freddy AI Copilot requires the $55/month Pro plan, and the AI Agent bills $49 per 100 sessions after a one-time 500-session credit. At high AI usage the gap narrows fast.
What does Tidio’s Lyro AI actually cost?
$39/month for 50 AI conversations ($0.78 each), falling to about $0.70 per conversation at the 300+ tier. Every account gets 50 Lyro conversations once, for the lifetime of the account — not monthly. The Lyro quota is billed separately from your base plan’s billable conversations.
Do any of these have a free plan in 2026?
Tidio has a genuine free tier (50 billable conversations a month). Intercom has no free tier — only a 14-day trial. Freshdesk’s old free plan is gone; there’s a 14-day trial and a limited 6-month program for up to 2 agents in some regions.
What’s the catch with per-resolution AI pricing?
Your bill grows with deflection. Every ticket the AI successfully handles is a billable event ($0.49–$0.99), so the pricing model taxes the exact outcome you’re optimizing for. The fix is to model your invoice at your real deflection rate, not the vendor’s demo numbers.
When does the n8n DIY route not make sense?
When you need a team inbox with SLAs, audit logs, and compliance features — or when you’d rather pay than spend a day building. DIY wins on cost (under $20/month at 500 tickets); it loses on polish and managed escalation.
Methodology
No accounts were created, no trials were run, and no support desks were used hands-on for this article. Every figure comes from vendors’ public pricing pages and third-party pricing breakdowns that cite those pages, all re-checked October 2026. The 500-ticket modeled invoices multiply published unit prices by stated scenario assumptions (40% AI deflection, annual billing); deflection rates are illustrative, not measured, and your real bill will follow your real mix. We deliberately did not invent resolution-rate or response-time figures from phantom testing — nothing here is presented as hands-on experience. Affiliate programs were checked via public program pages and 2026 affiliate coverage; none of the three help-desk vendors had a verified program at the time of writing, which is why this article carries no affiliate links.
