The $5 server is a down payment, not a price
“Self-hosting n8n costs $5 a month” is the most repeated half-truth in automation Twitter. The server is the smallest line item. The real invoice includes setup time, monthly maintenance, incident response, backups, SSL, and the domain for your webhooks. Skip the math and you’ll discover the true cost at 2 a.m. when a container won’t restart.
So let’s do the math properly: a 3-year total cost of ownership for every realistic way to run n8n, with 2026 prices and a stated hourly rate for your own time.
The options on the table

Option A: Raw VPS (Hetzner). The community favorite. Hetzner’s CX22 (2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe) runs about €4.35–4.99/month in the EU — but note: the CX22 generation has been retired for new orders; the current equivalent is the CX23 at €5.49/month (checked October 2026). You install Docker, run n8n via docker-compose, and own everything: updates, backups, SSL, monitoring.
Option B: Raw VPS (DigitalOcean). A $6/month basic droplet (1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM) exists, but n8n’s practical minimum is 2 GB of RAM — the honest droplet for n8n is the $12/month (2 GB) tier (checked October 2026). Same deal as Hetzner: you own the whole stack. DigitalOcean
Option C: Managed one-click hosting (PikaPods). From ~$3.70/month, resource-metered (checked October 2026). n8n runs in a managed container; updates, SSL, and backups are handled. You manage nothing. Execution count is unlimited, same as any self-hosted Community Edition.
Option D: Managed open-source hosting (Elestio). From $11/month for the entry tier (checked October 2026), managed with backups and monitoring included. More polished than the one-click hosts, more expensive. Elestio’s Level 2 support is a further ~$50/month on top — relevant if you want someone to actually help when things break.
Option E: n8n Cloud Pro. €50/month on annual billing (10,000 executions/month, 20 concurrent executions, workflow history, admin roles), €60 month-to-month (checked October 2026). Official support, zero ops. This is the baseline every self-hosted option has to beat.
(An honorable mention: Hostinger’s KVM VPS ships a 1-click n8n template at ~$5–6/month on promo terms — reasonable if you’re already a Hostinger customer, but renewal pricing roughly doubles it, so it doesn’t change the worksheet. Hostinger)
One more honest note before the worksheet: Hetzner has no affiliate program — you will see plenty of links to it, and nobody recommending it is earning a commission. We mention it because it’s the cheapest credible server, not because it pays us.
The 3-year TCO worksheet
Assumptions (all stated, all adjustable in the Methodology section):
- Time costed at $40/hour — a realistic freelance DevOps rate.
- Routine maintenance: 2 hours/month on a raw VPS (updates, SSL renewal checks, log review, backup verification).
- Incident buffer: 2 hours/year on a raw VPS (breaking updates, disk-full events, the occasional 2 a.m. problem).
- One-time setup: 3 hours for a raw VPS (Docker, compose, Caddy/Traefik, SSL, PostgreSQL, backups). 30 minutes for managed hosts. 15 minutes for n8n Cloud.
- Domain for webhooks: ~$12/year. SSL itself is free via Let’s Encrypt, but setting up and maintaining renewal automation is part of the 2 hours/month.
| Cost line | A: Hetzner (CX23) | B: DigitalOcean ($12 droplet) | C: PikaPods | D: Elestio | E: n8n Cloud Pro |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Server/hosting, 36 mo | €197.64 (€5.49/mo) | $432 ($12/mo) | $133.20 ($3.70/mo) | $396 ($11/mo) | €1,800 (€50/mo) |
| Setup (one-time) | $120 (3h) | $120 (3h) | $20 (0.5h) | $20 (0.5h) | $10 (0.25h) |
| Routine maintenance, 36 mo | $2,880 (72h) | $2,880 (72h) | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| Incidents, 3 yr | $240 (6h) | $240 (6h) | $60 (1.5h) | $60 (1.5h) | $0 |
| Domain, 3 yr | $36 | $36 | $0 (included URL) | $0 (included URL) | $0 |
| 3-year TCO | ~$3,360 | ~$3,708 | ~$213 | ~$476 | ~€1,810 |
For the Hetzner column, the euro hosting line converts to roughly $215 at typical rates, giving a total around $3,360 — the exact number moves with the exchange rate, but the conclusion doesn’t: your time is 85–90% of the cost on every raw-VPS option. The server price is a rounding error.
Where the raw-VPS math breaks
Here’s the honest crossover analysis. Compared to PikaPods at ~$3.70/month (~$213 over three years), a raw Hetzner VPS only wins if your total maintenance burden over three years stays under about $210 — at $40/hour, that’s under 5.5 hours of your time across three full years. One bad incident eats that. One major-version upgrade with breaking changes eats that.
The raw VPS still wins in exactly three cases:
- Your time is genuinely free — you’re learning, experimenting, or running a hobby instance. Legitimate. Just say it out loud.
- You need the control — data residency, compliance, custom integrations, or client work where you must own the infrastructure.
- You’re already running other things on the box — if the server also hosts your other apps, n8n’s marginal cost is near zero.
When n8n Cloud Pro is actually worth it
At €1,800 over three years, n8n Cloud Pro is the most expensive option on pure cost. It earns its price only when you need what self-hosting can’t give you: official n8n support, multi-user collaboration with admin roles, workflow history, or a team where “ask the one person who set up Docker” is not a continuity plan. If the cost of an hour of downtime exceeds €50, the Cloud plan is cheaper than your anxiety. For a solo founder with one instance, it almost never is.

A quick decision tree
- Learning / experimenting: Hetzner CX23 or any cheap VPS. Your time is tuition. Accept it.
- Solo founder, real business, under ~50k executions/month: PikaPods or InstaPods. $3.70–7/month, zero ops, unlimited executions. This is the answer for most readers.
- Team, client-critical, need support: n8n Cloud Pro. Pay the €50/month and stop thinking about infrastructure.
- Total beginner: Don’t self-host yet — start with n8n Cloud’s trial, and walk through our beginner’s setup guide before you touch a server.
AWL verdict: The “$5 server” pitch dies the moment you price your own time. At a $40/hour freelance rate, three years of raw-VPS self-hosting costs roughly $3,360 versus $213 for managed one-click hosting with the same unlimited executions. Self-hosting stops being worth it when your maintenance time costs more than ~$4/month — which, at any realistic hourly rate, means almost immediately. Run raw VPS only when your time is free, you need the control, or the box is already paid for by other apps.
FAQ
Is self-hosting n8n actually free?
The n8n Community Edition software is free with unlimited executions. Running it is not free: the server costs $3.70–12/month depending on the route, plus setup time, monthly maintenance, and a domain. “Free software, cheap hosting, real time cost” is the honest version.
How much RAM does self-hosted n8n need?
Treat 2 GB as the practical minimum. A 1 GB droplet or pod will run n8n for light workloads, but add a few AI agent nodes or concurrent workflows and you’ll hit memory pressure. The cheapest tiers of PikaPods (~$3.70/month) and the Hetzner CX23 (4 GB) both clear this comfortably.
What about backups — are they included?
On a raw VPS: no. DigitalOcean charges 20% of the droplet price for weekly backups (30% for daily), and Hetzner’s snapshot approach is similarly an add-on you must configure. PikaPods and Elestio include backup handling in their managed tiers. Whatever route you take, verify a restore at least once — a backup you’ve never restored is a rumor.
Can I switch from self-hosted to n8n Cloud later?
Yes. n8n workflows export as JSON and import cleanly into Cloud. The friction isn’t technical — it’s the execution meter. Audit your monthly execution count before switching; if you’re above 10,000 executions/month, you’ll outgrow the Pro plan fast and the math flips back toward self-hosting.
Does self-hosting n8n violate its license?
No, for normal use. n8n’s Community Edition is fair-code licensed: free to self-host for your own business. The restriction applies to using it inside a SaaS product exposed to end customers. If you’re automating your own business, you’re fine.
Methodology
Every price in this post was verified in October 2026: Hetzner CX23 at €5.49/month (with the note that the older CX22 generation at ~€4.35–4.99/month has been retired for new orders), DigitalOcean basic droplets at $4 (512 MB), $6 (1 GB), and $12 (2 GB) per month, PikaPods from ~$3.70/month, Elestio from $11/month, and n8n Cloud Pro at €50/month annual / €60 month-to-month with 10,000 executions. The $40/hour rate is our stated assumption for freelance DevOps time — adjust it to your own rate; the conclusion holds at any rate above about $10/hour. The 2 hours/month maintenance figure comes from production self-hosted operators reporting 1–3 hours/month for updates, SSL, log review, and backup checks. The 3-year horizon is deliberate: year-one math flatters raw VPS (setup is a one-time cost), while three years exposes the compounding cost of maintenance.
